Perks for the Parents

A beautiful cottage near the coast of Portinho da Arrabida in Portugal, with a private pool, great living space and eclectic interiors. It sleeps 9 + 1. The main living area is bright and open, with plenty of space for kids and adults to spend time together. The space has been recently remodeled so it’s easy to cook family meals in the contemporary kitchen while the kids play. The large French doors allow for a good indoor-outdoor flow, and make it easy for parents to keep an eye on children who are outside - you can even watch them in the pool while you enjoy a drink on the veranda. Beyond the pool, there is lots of room to roam outdoors, and beautiful trees to climb and build forts under.

Why Kids Love it

There’s something for all ages at this house! Kids (and adults who are kids at heart) will enjoy the pool in warmer weather. The sleeping arrangements allow for larger and extended families, and also privacy for parents. There is space for younger children to run free both inside and outside, and plenty of cozy corners for older children and adults to relax with a good book. Kids will love hanging out at the beach for a swim or paddle-board session, or take them to explore the Forte de Santa Maria da Arrabida maritime and archeological museum on the coast.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 6 nights May through September; 5 nights October through April. Weekend stays considered depending on availability in the low season. Safety notes: the stairs to the second floor have a high railing and are gated on top, but they are open between steps, so it’s best to keep an eye on small children. The pool is not gated and adult supervision is required while children are swimming. The pool is not heated so the summer months are best for swimming. The property is walled and gated. For parents with babies and toddlers, there’s a baby bath, children’s utensils, a stair gate and a high chair. There’s space for parking 2 cars - car rental is recommended. The house comes with brand new air conditioning and heating, a fireplace for cooler nights, a dishwasher, a washer/dryer and WiFi.

About the Location

The residence is located inside the Serra da Arrabida National Park, an hour south of Lisbon on Portugal’s west coast. It’s just 20 minutes from some of Europe's most beautiful beaches, including Praia dos Galapinhos. You can walk the rolling country roads around the house and find fresh bread in the neighboring village. A 5-minute drive will take you to Vila Nogueira, where you can buy groceries, grab an espresso or a traditional pastry, dine al fresco and tour a historic winery. The picturesque fishing village of Sesimbra and beautiful Palmela castle are both just 15 minutes away. In Setubal, just a little farther down the road, you can visit the Mercado do Livramento (voted Europe’s best fish market), stroll the old town and catch the ferry to Troia - the peninsula leading to Comporta. The nearest airport is Lisbon which is under 1 hour away by car or train.

Accommodation Details

The residence has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, set over 2 floors. The kitchen and bathrooms are newly remodeled and very functional, and the downstairs bathroom includes a bathtub. The living area features soaring wooden ceilings and an open main space, bordered by a wall of French windows that lead out to a full veranda and sweeping views - look out all the way to Sintra on a clear day and the lights of Lisbon at night. There is also 1 bedroom on the ground floor with two twin beds (which can be made up as a large queensize on request). Adjacent to this bedroom is a double sofa bed in the sitting room. On the 2nd floor there are 2 bedrooms: 1 with a double bed and another with a set of bunk beds. There is also an alcove room upstairs with a child-sized bed but no door - ideal for younger kids.

Style Notes

Eclectic cottage. The house was built by the host’s grandparents and has served as a summer residence for their bi-national family. Like its namesake – and the host’s mother – it’s a graceful, exuberant mix of the traditional and the modern. In collaboration with architect Manuel Centeno, the family have reimagined the house, updating the kitchen, bathrooms and pool, while preserving the traditional - and uniquely Portuguese - soul. It’s decorated with an eclectic mix of antiques and classic, modern furnishings and all the linens and towels are of the highest quality and made in Portugal. We love the rustic wood textures and beams in the living space, the traditional tiled floor in the kitchen and the stunning pergola terrace in the back.

We are a multi-national (Portuguese, Mexican and American (0: ) family living in Los Angeles, CA. My mother is Portuguese, and my best childhood memories are of summers spent running free with my sister and cousins around our family compound in Azeitao. As an adult, I've come to appreciate even more what a truly special place the Quinta da Fininha is, along with its beautiful surroundings. We love to introduce everything this lovely corner of Portugal has to offer to visitors, and look forward to sharing our summer home with you.

The area is very nice and there are lots of things to do. The communication with the host was excellent. The house is beautiful and has a lot of history, however I felt the advertisement made it look more modern than it actually was. And for a rental property I would advise to take the personal items out and the small decorative items made it less suitable to rent out to family with small children.
Response from Julia F.
We were concerned when we received Miriam's review, especially since we have never before received a negative review, and reached out to better understand her comments, but never received a reply. Miriam had a couple of questions regarding the dishwasher and stove, both of which the local manager, Manuel, promptly resolved. As the listing clearly states, the house was built by our grandparents and the kitchen, bathrooms and pool area were remodeled in 2020/21. All appliances and fixtures are new. Apparently someone in Miriam's party broke a lamp, which Manuel assured them was nothing to worry about. We don't consider a lamp to be a personal belonging -- it is there for our guests' use. We remove all personal affects - photos, clothes, etc - when the home is rented, and have never received complaints of this nature from families with young children who have stayed before. It rained heavily the entire week Miriam and her family stayed at the house, which I'm sure was very disappointing and may have colored their experience.

We had a wonderful time! Quinta da Fininha was perfect for our family (3 energetic, outdoorsy children!). The setting was beautiful and our kids loved the pool and running around the grounds and we enjoyed the great views from the deck. The house was so spacious, clean and comfortable. It has been beautifully restored and cared for. We made a couple of trips to Setubal fish market (exceptional!) to cook on the BBQ back at the Quinta and had some delicious fish and seafood at beachside restaurant O Farol as well. The fresh fish was definitely a highlight for us. As was our daily walk down to Lima for a morning coffee - such a great little addition to the village. The restaurant, beach and local recommendations from Julia were so helpful. The Arrabida beaches are spectacular and the water so clean and refreshing. Our favourite beach was Galaphinos - a bit of a hike but worth it for less crowds. We have returned to London feeling like we've been away for much longer than 2 weeks and with many happy memories we will treasure forever. What a special part of the world, thank you for sharing it with us.

This home, the host and the area were all absolute dreams for my family (myself, my husband and our two tween kids). We love being outdoors, and this property is gorgeous. We felt extremely lucky to stay here, to share in the family history of the home and the village nearby. It oozed with family love and care. We swam multiple times a day, walked the property just for fun, enjoyed the variety of trees and incredible layout of the home and surrounding space. We stayed here for 2 weeks, and wish it could have been longer. Julia provided helpful information about the surrounding cities, places to eat, local treasures and things to do. She also answered any questions I had leading up to the trip, and I could feel how much she loves this home and area of Portugal. We found the beaches around Azeitao to be some of the most clean, beautiful and uncrowded we have ever experienced. We hiked daily as well, and ventured out to surrounding cities which was so easy to do (rental car recommended). We also had full days where we cooked and swam and read and worked and never left, which are already wonderful memories. I am in love with this home, the tranquility surrounding it and the pace of life we enjoyed there. I am beyond grateful for this experience.

We had a wonderful stay at the Quinta da Fininha. The house is fully equipped, spacious and beautifully furnished. The beds are very convenient and the airco is perfect. The garden, pool and view are exceptional.

Wow! We were in for quite a treat when we chose this home. You will feel fully immersed in the Portuguese culture the minute you walk in. The house itself is immaculate, the bedding is very comfortable, and the pool is just perfect. Sitting outside watching the sunset with a glass of wine, listening to the cecadas while the children played was heavenly. The neighborhood of Azeitao is small but wonderful. We especially loved The Wine Corner for dinner. We were very close to Sesimbra where we did a 3 hour kayak tour and close enough to do day trips to both Lisbon and Sintra which we highly recommend. When we left this house, we drove only 2.5 hours to The Algarve. It was so exciting to see so much of the country for our first time. This home is so special and homey, and a perfect location to explore other parts of Portugal — I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
