Perks for the Parents

This classic French manor house with a fenced pool is ideal for a multi-family trip, complete with newly resurfaced artificial clay tennis court, a bunk room for kids and multiple terraces where you can relax in the sun. It suits 2-4 families with plenty of space to spread out and enjoy time together or apart. While someone is firing up the barbecue, others can enjoy a pre-dinner drink on the terrace with beautiful views over the hills, or at the pool bar. On cooler days, there are lots of sitting areas inside with a sitting room and study downstairs plus a further sitting room upstairs with English-speaking TV channels. For cozy winter evenings, there are 4 wood burning stoves and a range of board games and baby foot. Further treats for parents include the local Saturday market in Sainte Foy La Grande, and the wine area of St-Emilion, a half hour drive away. Canoeing down the Dordogne as a family is also fun: a number of local companies provide guided tours or simply take you upstream so that you can gentle paddle back and enjoy the scenery.

Why Kids Love it

The house and gardens are great for children of all ages. Toddlers will enjoy pottering around the garden, exploring the various woodlands and glades, while older children will love the pool (and there's an outdoor shower for cooling off) and can play soccer, table tennis, croquet, boules, cricket, tennis and more (with equipment provided). Children can roam free for hours. Inside, there are plenty of board games, and there is space to play hide-and-seek. There is a dedicated children’s bedroom for up to 5 children, set up with 2 bunkbeds and 1 twin bed, plus an ensuite shower room. For younger children, the master bedroom has a standalone bath that is fun for bathtime, and there are 2 further family bathrooms with tubs. There is a playground in Sainte Foy.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 4 nights except between 27 June and 5 September 2020 where the minimum is 7 nights and Saturday-Saturday only. The pool is fenced and the upstairs windows have safety locks. The pool is not heated but has a solar cover which keeps it a few degrees warmer than the air temperature - this is not required in the summer but the rest of the year can be changeable. A travel crib and high chair can be provided - please request on booking. There is 1 ungated flight of stairs in the property. Car rental is recommended for this area.

About the Location

The residence is a 10-minute drive to Sainte Foy La Grande in the Gironde area of France, near the Dordogne River. The closest airport is in Bergerac, around 30 minutes away by car, while Bordeaux airport is 1 hour 15 minutes away. Nearby attractions include the market at Sainte-Foy-La-Grande (Saturday 8am - 1pm). There are other markets in and around the area throughout the week - details are provided in the house manual. During the summer, there is also a night market at Sainte-Foy every Thursday. The UNESCO World Heritage Site St Émilion is a 30-minute drive (or short train ride) away and makes a great day trip. Saint-Émilion is one of the principal red wine areas of Bordeaux along with the Médoc, Graves and Pomerol. The castle at Duras (20 minutes’ drive) also makes for a fascinating and family-friendly excursion.

The house sits in mature grounds of approximately 6 acres. The kitchen is well equipped with a blender, coffee machine and more, and has a family-sized dining area. There are multiple lounge areas, and family bathrooms that include tubs and showers. All the bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms. Various terraces are perfect for pre-dinner drinks and al fresco dining and a gas barbecue and equipment are provided. All 5 guest bedrooms are large; 4 have kingsize beds, and the other is set up as a children’s bedroom with 2 bunk beds and a twin bed. Four of the bedrooms have AC. Style Notes

French Fancy. The house is beautifully decorated in a classic style in keeping with the age of the house, with plenty of modern accents. Throughout the house, there are exposed wooden floorboards, tiles and brickwork accentuating the character of the house. All the bedrooms are light and airy with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside and vines. Beds are made up with Egyptian cotton sheets and towels for a luxury touch. The farmhouse-style kitchen is the centre of the house, with a large stone fireplace and wood burning stove, plus access to the outside dining terrace. We love the kids bunk room - fun will be prioritized over sleep, but that’s vacations for you - along with the sunny terraces and character-packed interior.

Bordeaux, Southwest France

Treasure hunts, safari treks and wine

Beautiful Bordeaux is much admired for its wine and thankfully its vineyards are well set up for families with plenty of options to entertain the kids while you test the city’s famous grape juice, including iPod tours and treasure hunts, hands-on blending sessions and safari treks spotting local wildlife amid the vines. In the city itself, there are so many places to play, from skateparks and riverside sports facilities to cycle paths and the Miroir d’Eau, a reflective pool opposite the Place de la Bourse.

We are very happy with our stay at The Sainte Foy La Grande. The house was very easy to find and had everything you might need. We were three families with children and the place is very spacious and comfortable. The kitchen well equipped, a very beautiful garden. There is a swimming pool as well, but unfortunately the weather was not warm enough for us to swim. It was in overall a very nice family escape for us and we definitely recommend it.

We were two families with a combined 4 adults and 6 children, and the Sainte-Foy Residence was perfect for our needs: lots of space (but not too much!) both indoors and out. Parents could chat in the downstairs sitting room while teens chilled in the upstairs one. And we loved all the games: tennis, petanque, ping-pong, foosball, croquet...we could have played all day. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate; it was too chilly to swim in late October, though one brave child took a dip in the house pool. We loved visiting the area, especially the Sunday market in Issigeac, which is not to be missed. There are plenty of convenient supermarkets a short drive away, including a truly massive E. Leclerc. We did have mosquitoes, as mentioned by a previous reviewer--pack the bug spray if you plan to visit, even in October, and keep the shutters closed tight around sunset--but that was only a tiny nuisance during an otherwise lovely stay.

Our party of 7 adults and 4 children had a wonderful stay at Sainte Foy La Grande. It's a house you wish you owned! Great communications with the owner and the property manager in the lead up to our stay, and a few things that required the attention of the property manager during our visit were dealt with swiftly and efficiently. It's a beautiful house and the grounds are vast with everything you could think of to entertain several generations. Plus it's near lots of things to do, cafes, markets and places to explore. The house could do with air conditioning however. Our stay was swelteringly hot, and the table top fans that are in each room did little to help. There were lots of mosquitoes so we couldn't leave the windows open at night (plus the worry of kids climbing up and out). The windows have shutters which we kept closed during the day but it didn't help much. Having said that, we all had a great time. Thanks Anna & Family!

Thank you Tara for your kind comments about our home. We are delighted you all enjoyed your stay. As you mentioned in your review, it was unusually hot in France during your stay which of course doesn't appeal to everyone. The fans are normally sufficient, but obviously not in this case with record-breaking temperatures! I want to point out that we do indeed have safety catches on all unsafe windows to allow some air, but understand that you would not want to leave the windows wide open. Thanks again for staying at The Sainte Foy La Grande Residence! Anna x
