The Barmeston Road Residence
Perks for the Parents
An ultra stylish interior designer’s residence, bursting with colorful contemporary style and beautiful period features. It sleeps 9. Set over 3 floors, and home to a family of 6, the house has plenty of space to hang out together, or apart, and comes with a private garden complete with a bohemian outdoor living room. For additional privacy and relaxation the decadent primary bedroom is on a floor of its own, and comes with a kingsize bed as well as its own ensuite. The downstairs living areas are designed for family gatherings with a double sized reception room, a snug, a huge teak dining table and plenty of ovens for rustling up a family feast. For those seeking a break from cooking, the vibrant local neighborhood has a regular weekend food market and is full of cafes and restaurants, many of which offer takeaway options. The local rail stations are just over a 10 minute walk bringing central London within easy reach.
Why Kids Love it
Kids will love this playful house, packed full of color and fun from its jungle themed bathrooms to the Moroccan style gazebo nestled in its sub tropical garden. The kids’ bedrooms are stylish and cool with bold textiles, funky lighting and art works, including a feature wall of skateboards. There’s an abundance of space to chill out in with bean bags and sink-in sofas a-plenty. There’s no television but the kids won’t miss it with so much else to do inside, and out. Mini musicians might enjoy tinkering about on the piano, and there's a snug ideal for curling up with a good book in. The large, sociable dining room is perfectly set up for family feasts and games nights, and for outdoor play there's a full-sized table tennis table in the garden. The local area has plenty on offer for kids of all ages including buzzy local cafes, yoga studios and a magical nature-filled park with its own swimming lake.
Things to Know
Minimum stay: 2 nights. Please note that the house is set over 3 floors without an elevator. Please note that the host’s kids are all teenagers now so the house is not 'baby proofed'; younger ones should be supervised around the stairs and plug sockets etc. There are 3 very friendly Siamese cats in residence who will be there during your stay and would need to be fed and cuddled. They have a cat flap and are allowed to come and go freely in the day but at night they mainly stay inside so it is important that guests are tolerant to cats. The residence has good Wi-Fi throughout and desk space is available in some of the rooms for those needing to work. There is parking on the driveway with space for one car.
About the Location
The residence is located in Catford, an up-and-coming neighborhood in south east London. Known for its creative and vibrant local scene, it has plenty of buzzy cafes and restaurants as well as yoga studios, boutique stores, music bars and a monthly weekend food market. There are some incredible green spaces a short drive away including Beckenham Place Park (6 minutes by car), a free to enter country estate with a playground, wild swimming lake, walks, and a Georgian mansion with a family-friendly stables café serving up wood-fired pizzas. Greenwich Park, another family favourite with a planetarium, observatory and interactive naval museum is 15 minutes by car and bus. Access into central London couldn’t be easier with 2 train stations just over a 10-minute walk from the residence with trains into London Bridge (for Borough Market, The Tate Modern), Waterloo East (for the South Bank, London Eye), Charing Cross (for the West End and Soho), and Blackfriars (for St Paul's, the City of London).
Accommodation Details
The residence is a Victorian semi-detached house with 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms set over 3 floors. The colorful entrance is on the ground floor, leading off to a large double living room at the front of the house with sofas, chairs and a fireplace. The back of the residence has been extended and houses a spacious kitchen, fully equipped with everything a guest would expect including a large fridge and separate freezer, a range cooker with 2 separate ovens, and a built-in slow cooker. There’s a snug adjoining it and a separate open-plan dining room (with a table seating 8). There is also a utility room with a washer/dryer and a downstairs cloakroom. Crittal doors lead off the kitchen and dining room to a mediterranean style garden, fully decked with an alfresco dining table, a sofa set, a table tennis table, and an outdoor living area under a gazebo. Upstairs, the first floor houses the second bedroom which comes with a kingsize bed and an ensuite bathroom, 2 bedrooms with double beds and a smaller bedroom with a single bed. There is a shared family bathroom on this floor with a bathtub. The primary bedroom is upstairs again on second floor, and has a kingsize bed and an ensuite bathroom.
Style Notes
Urban boho. Artfully crafted throughout, this uber fun residence has featured in many magazines including the Sunday Times. Showcasing the talents of its interior designer owner, the house is an ode to joy mixing unique contemporary touches with beautiful period detail, and plenty of vibrant bursts of color and pattern. Light global/boho touches are weaved in alongside luxurious textiles - the living room spaces are a melting pot of low-slung 70s style velvet sofas, unusual lamps and lighting, vibrant cushions, rugs and striking art works. Each bedroom and bathroom has been individually styled to create a unique experience in each with exposed brickwork and jungle themes accented by high ceilings and original features. The plant-filled, coral dining room is particular joy to hang out in with its large teak dining table perfect for decadent dining and huge glass doors that flood in light and garden views. We also love the kitchen with its floor to ceiling metallic tiles, contrasting with concrete and brass worktops, Moroccan tiled floors and olive green, shaker-style cabinetry.
