Perks for the Parents

This stunning architectural wood cabin, just minutes from the Gérardmer ski resort, is surrounded by stunning lake and mountain views. It sleeps 16 + 1. Parents with a flair for design and architecture will appreciate this unique wooden home, which blends naturally into the backdrop of the forest due to its larch wood façade and a steel roof. It has an open plan layout and a minimalist design - the perfect place for parents to escape from it all and get back to nature. There is a yoga deck which is touched by the first rays of sunrise every morning, so early birds can work out in the most tranquil of surroundings. What’s more, the backyard open fire area (inspired by ‘Boma’ areas of Africa) is the ideal spot for cooking rustic meals or relaxing with the family. Spend your summer days swimming in Lake Gérardmer or hit the ski slopes in winter - this house is a year-round retreat.

Why Kids Love it

The house comes with toys and books for kids of all ages, all stocked in a dedicated kids’ play space - a separate mezzanine floor over the main living room. Little ones will enjoy the flat, safe garden (which also has a shaded outdoor picnic area) as well as the forest surrounding the house. Older kids and teens can play Petanque outdoors, overlooking the lake, or spend their days playing table football with the rest of the family. The whole region is family friendly with adapted hiking trails, snow activities in winter and lake activities in the summer. For lazy days there is a cozy TV area in the mezzanine room, which has Netflix, Canal +, and Amazon Prime.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 in low and mid season, 5 - 7 days in high season (including school holidays). Price per additional adult from the third adult is 40€/night. Safety notes: the main floor is secured with stair gates and the backyard is secure, so young children can play safely. Parents with babies or toddlers will be happy to find that the house also comes with cabinet locks, children’s utensils, a high chair, fireplace guard, window guards, and a changing table. Sorry - no pets allowed. Sheets, towels, and cleaning services are included in the rates. There is plenty of space for parking and car rental is essential.

About the Location

This house is located 1 mile away from the village of Gérardmer in France. The village has a choice of bars and restaurants, bakeries, shops, supermarkets, and a tourist center. It’s bordered by the beautiful Lake Gérardmer which offers natural swimming boating tours, stand-up paddle boarding, and fishing, as well as a water-front park, hiking trails, and a playground. It’s just 10 minutes’ drive to Gérardmer ski resort. This picturesque area is surrounded by endless hiking trails in the forest and lies in the very center of the Ballon des Vosges regional natural park. The closest airports are Strasbourg and Basel, each are a 1h40 drive.

Accommodation Details

This residence has 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms, divided into 3 volumes, with a middle floor seemingly floating above the slope of the land. The ground floor includes a sauna, the utility room, and storage rooms. On the first floor, there is a spacious kitchen with a transition to the central part of the house, which is where you’ll find the living room with a wood burning stove (plus large dining tables in both rooms). Large windows frame the view of Lake Gérardmer. The third volume offers 5 bedrooms (each with a queensize bed and en-suite bathroom) as well as a dormitory room with 6 single beds. The hosts also have a toddler bed available. Outside, the house has a south-facing exposed terrace, a shaded outdoor dining area, a Petanque field, and an open fire area.

Style Notes

Contemporary cabin. The striking house is inspired by the simple shapes and materials of the regional farmhouses, but has its own contemporary style. The windows of varying sizes appear as if they were randomly positioned all over the façade, with some protruding from the façade as boxes. The interiors are finished with cross laminated pine wood: floors, ceilings, walls, and built-in units are all made of wood, while the bathrooms and the kitchen have small tiled areas to add a subtle touch of color. Both the fixtures and the free-standing furniture were made by the German label Stattmann. With their gentle curves, they complement the circular details that can be found in the house, such as the round arches, a wall with circular openings between the sleeping and living areas, and round light switches, to break up the plain straight design. We love the pared-back black kitchenware, the minimalist black dining furniture, and calming neutral tones used in the fabrics.

Born and raised in the mountains and lucky enough to have built the cabin I dreamt of as a child.
