Perks for the Parents

A stylish lakeside log cabin nestled in the woods of a private baronial estate, 2 hours west of Gothenburg. It sleeps 8 + 2. Getting the kids outside is an easy task here with acres of wildlife-rich forest and Sweden’s largest private lake to explore. The estate includes a bike shed with mountain bikes, row boats, canoes and fishing gear for guests to borrow. There's a sandy lakeside beach a short walk away for picnics on the shore and refreshing swims, with a handy lake house and sauna for warming up after. Land-loving guests can hit the cycling/walking trails, collecting blueberries, lingonberries and mushrooms along the way. The cabin provides a relaxing, homely base to return to with beautifully decorated interiors, and a large wraparound deck with lake views and a sunny position.

Why Kids Love it

Kids will embrace cabin life in no time with plenty to keep them occupied outside and in. The kids' bedrooms are playfully decorated with bunk and single options to cater for all ages. Toys are provided and there’s plenty of space to chill out, with a large living room, a deck area and a table tennis room. The call of the wild is hard to ignore and with bikes, boats and canoes to borrow, there’s plenty of reasons to get outside. Kids can spend their days picking blueberries, feeding the estate’s chickens, cycling forest trails or diving from the floating platform in the lake. Wildlife loving kids may even spot an elk or a deer on their travels. The nearest town, Hjo, has ice cream shops, a pretty harbor, an outdoor heated swimming pool, lake beach and a playground. Two cribs, a highchair and a baby bath can be provided on request.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 5 nights; 7 in July and August. There is no WiFi or TV but there is reasonable 4G reception in the cabin. Please note that there are no stair gates or bathtubs at the property. The residence is situated in a remote rural location, 25 minutes from the nearest town, and car rental is heavily recommended. There is free parking on site. The cabin, and estate are in a waterside location and young children should be supervised when exploring outside. There are mosquitoes, ticks and midges around at certain times of year, so it is recommended that kids wear long pants and sleeved shirts when in the woods. Row boats, canoes and bikes are shared with the other properties in the estate and used at guests’ own risk. Pets may be accepted on request; please notify the hosts at time of booking.

About the Location

Style Notes

Lakeside retreat. A chic Swedish log cabin with bags of country charm and wonderful lake and forest views. It has been lovingly updated with beautiful wallpapers, stylish color schemes and luxury furnishings to create a characterful, homely residence. High ceilings and picture windows provide a light and airy feel throughout with nature themed wall papers and textiles reflecting the beauty of the residence’s location. There’s an eclectic mix of furniture, combining vintage stoves and dressers with mid-century armchairs and colorful contemporary prints. The kids’ bedrooms are particularly playful with modern textiles and classic cabin style. We love the spacious deck for morning coffees with a view and evening socials under the stars.

Ed, Sara, Ella and Simon live in Saltsjöbaden outside Stockholm most of the year and at Alvasjö our idyllic lakeside retreat in the summers. We love spending time at the beach in Comporta too!

Lakes, rivers and sled rides

On the western shore of Lake Vättern in south Sweden, four hour’s drive from Stockholm, Hjo is a water and nature lover’s dream. Be charmed by the simple wooden houses, the lovely parklands and beautiful landscape. Take the kids to the city park, visit the bison farm or check out local handmade crafts at Butik Rustik boutique. Call in at a kennel to see how sled-dogs live and listen to stories about their adventures north of the Arctic Circle.
