Perks for the Parents

Escape to this nature hideaway in 20 acres of woodlands along the Hudson River, with a heated pool and beautiful river views. It sleeps 8 + 2. This charming farmhouse is well set-up for families, with lots of outdoor and indoor spaces to relax plus a separate office with a couch and reading nook for parents to get away and unwind. The whole family will love hanging out in the backyard around the heated pool on loungers - parents can work out in the pool house, admire the Hudson River views or explore the woodland walking trails in the surrounding areas. For parents with babies or toddlers, the hosts have 2 pack n plays (one with an infant insert), baby bath, high chair, booster seat, bottle warmer, potty, bed bumper and toys for various ages that can be provided upon request.

Why Kids Love it

The home has lots of toys, books, and 2 sensory swings for children under 10, as well as plenty of room for wheeled toys around the house. The children's room is fun and colorful, and there’s a very narrow staircase leading down to the kitchen that has been sectioned off with commercial grade netting designed to hold up to 300lbs, which makes the perfect little reading nook for children. There are endless things to explore in the yard including a swing set and a heated 50ft pool, as well as nearby walking trails - if they’re lucky, they might even spot a deer or fox in the woods. There is a large park and playground on the river (about 5 minutes’ drive north) where you can rent canoes and picnic.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: XX nights. Safety notes: the staircase leading to the second floor has a safety gate. Much of the home has been renovated but the floors are not level and there are several small steps throughout the house which are not gated. The pool is gated on 3 sides with a steep cliff overlooking the Hudson River separating it on the 4th side. The yard has a relatively steep drop but there is landscaping to delineate the area. The house is located in the woods so occasionally bugs do make their way into the home. Both screen doors lock from the inside for safety and a mattress bumper is available for younger children using one of the twin platform beds. The pool is generally open from early May - late September but please contact the host for specific dates.

About the Location

The house is located close to Castleton-on-Hudson, right on the Hudson River, 20 minutes’ drive south from downtown Albany. A hiking trail on the property offers spectacular river vistas and views of the Castelton-on-Hudson bridge and train trestle. If you choose to sleep with the windows open you’ll hear the train pass over the Hudson River. Explore Henry Hudson Park (a few minutes north) and the nationally-ranked Joralemon disk golf course just up the road. It’s around 20-25 minutes to Columbia County, and 35 minutes to the Catskills, so you can explore the best hiking, skiing and beauty in the Hudson Valley and Berkshires. Car rental is essential to get around the area.

Accommodation Details

The house has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms set over 2 floors. The ground floor has a large living room with an extra deep sofa from Restoration Hardware and 2 very comfy armchairs, plus a smart TV. The expansive kitchen has everything you need, including a Breville espresso maker, induction stove with built-in air fryer, brand new Samsung 4 door fridge/freezer, rice cooker and more. There’s a large living area next to the kitchen that holds a breakfast nook with a dining table seating 6, as well as 2 oversized swivel armchairs and a sensory swing that holds up to 250lbs. The area next to the fireplace holds another small laptop nook and the formal dining room seats up to 8 people. Upstairs, the spacious primary bedroom features a queensize bed and sitting nook with a recliner, as well as 4 large windows overlooking the Hudson River (visible during the winter months). This room also has an ensuite bathroom with a soaking tub, rainshower head and handheld. The Toto toilet offers heated seating, auto open and close, and an integrated bidet. The bathroom floor is also heated with a digital control. The second queensize bedroom also has 2 large windows overlooking the Hudson River and another large window facing north into the woodlands. The third children’s bedroom has 2 long twin floor beds on very low platforms for kids or adults. The second floor also has a private office/man cave, with a desk and large screen that you can connect to your laptop. Both full bathrooms have tubs and handheld shower faucets.

Style Notes

The home is an old farmhouse, with a portion built in the late 1780s and the other part in the 1830s. In true farmhouse style, you’ll find exposed brick, wide plank wooden flooring, beautiful built-ins and charming spaces. It’s bright and comfortable with subtle design touches throughout the home and contemporary details: the kitchen is very modern and spacious, with new appliances, granite countertops and a reverse osmosis tap for drinking and cooking water. We love the jungle wall murals in the children’s bedroom, the unique historical fireplaces and the blue integrated bedroom storage.

My family and I split our time between NYC and upstate NY and love traveling as much as possible. One of our son's first words was "airplane". I appreciate homes with lots of comfort, charm and a bit of personality.
