Perks for the Parents

Escape from the hustle and bustle of NYC and head to this beautiful family home in Brooklyn, packed full of original features and Victorian charm. It sleeps 10. The hosts have designed this home with family in mind. The large kitchen and adjoining dining room make for great cooking and dining with the family, and the parents bedroom is comfortable and spacious - with its own sitting room/TV area - so you can escape the chaos for a moment of relaxation. The split floor bedrooms means it’s also a great set up for families traveling with an au pair or a nanny.

Why Kids Love it

Kids will love heading up to their own playroom on the top floor, where they can play with games, toys, books, a play kitchen and a small table for arts and crafts. This house is spacious enough for the host’s family of 5, and yet close enough to the city to explore the top kids’ spots on foot or by public transport. It’s just a few blocks from Prospect Park, which is the largest park in all of Brooklyn, with a lake, sports courts, playground, zoo, seasonal ice skating rink and botanical gardens.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 nights. Safety notes: there are 3 floors here and no stair gates, so very young children should be supervised. Driveway parking is available for 3 cars, but car rental is not strictly essential - the house is only a few blocks from the subway station, for easy transport around the city. The washing machine uses a reservoir so you do not need to add detergent before every use. Extra towels and linens can be found in the 3rd floor bedroom closet. The house comes with air conditioning, dishwasher, games console, DVD library, TV and WiFi.

About the Location

This home is located in Brooklyn, New York, only a few blocks from the Ft. Hamilton F/G subway station, which will take you directly into Manhattan in approximately 35 minutes. This area has lots of restaurants, grocery stores, bars and coffee shops, all within walking distance of the house and Brooklyn is known for being very family friendly. Head up towards Brooklyn Bridge (around 30 minutes) for a family-friendly trip to Jane’s Carousel and the water-front parks, or ride the subway into Manhattan for some grown-up culture at The Met. It’s around 40 minutes’ drive from JFK, Newark or LaGuardia airports.

Accommodation Details

This residence has 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, set over 3 floors. When you arrive, you'll step onto a newly-constructed Victorian front porch. The first floor has a large entryway with coat racks and a sitting bench. From the entry way you can turn into the living room or head into the dining room and kitchen. There is a small powder room under the front stairs. Between the living room and dining room is the library/music room, which features two comfortable reading chairs and a piano. There is also a carpeted back stairwell that leads directly into the kitchen. There are 3 bedrooms on the second floor - one with a double bunk bed, one with 2 single beds and the primary bedroom which has a kingsize bed and an adjoining sitting room (with a sofa and 60-inch flatscreen TV). The second floor bathroom features a shower and bathtub. The third floor offers another bedroom with a queensize bed, as well as a laundry room/playroom, an office with a double sofabed (which can be used as a fifth bedroom), and additional full bathroom. There is a backyard area that is currently concrete, which will be re-done in summer 2021.

Style Notes

Grand Victorian. This attractive home was built in the early 1900's and still features many of the original details, such as the parquet flooring, stained glass windows and crown molding. The hosts have painstakingly restored the property to its former architectural glory, but outfitted it with an eclectic modern sense of design. Guests will find plants in many of the rooms and windows on all four sides of the house, allowing ample sunlight: there is an atmosphere of calm relaxation as a counterpoint to the active nature of the city. We love the grand pillars framing the mirror in the hallway, the beautiful bay windows and the contemporary diagonal brick tiles in the bathroom.

My wife and I have lived in Brooklyn for over 8 years now. We both own small businesses in the area, and absolutely love the neighborhood. We have two daughters, ages 3 and 1.

Kensington, Brooklyn

In the center of Brooklyn

Quiet, unpretentious and popular with families, Kensington is just south of Prospect Park and under half an hour from Manhattan by train. Wood frame houses mingle with Brownstones along the leafy streets and families play in Ablemarle Playground. With multicultural food stores, a riding stables and great commuter links, it’s an easy place to base yourself in Brooklyn.
