This 100-year-old boutique Keralan villa has a private pool, chef, housekeeper and host, and suits a small family of up to 2 adults and 2 children. Just 300 meters from the beach, it is a charming one-story pad with intricately-carved columns and Indian style. By day, splash in the Arabian Sea and play on the beach; come night, perch on the porch illuminated by lanterns and enjoy the breeze and flower-filled patio. Children under five stay for free and the chef has a special kids menu catering for their needs. For larger groups, the residence can be booked alongside Orchid Cottage for a group of up to four adults and three children in total.

What we love

  • The history and character of the house itself - it’s well preserved and has been carefully renovated to add a touch of luxury
  • Just 300 meters from the beach
  • Sleek modern master bedroom with a king size bed; 2 extra beds are provided for children
  • Kitchenette with sink, fridge and kettle if you want/need to self cater; a private chef is included however

  • Dining areas beside the pool and under the porch

Marari Villas is a concept developed by a couple; Rupert (British) & Olga (Russian), who live on Marari Beach. We manage all properties ourselves to ensure high standards of hospitality are maintained. We understand the local culture, people and way of life to help you experience a different side of Kerala and will show you the best sights, activities and hidden secrets of our favorite place on Earth. Our aspiration is simple - to ensure you have a wonderful holiday in a unique property on an outstanding beach.

Mararikulam, Kerala

Hammocks, sunshine and elephants

This beach village in Kerala, South India, has a beautiful coconut palm-fringed beach, tropical climate and relaxed approach to life. From simple pleasures like swimming in the Arabian sea and playing in the sand to temple visits by tuk-tuk, houseboat cruises and canoe trips, there are plenty of ways to enjoy it.

Hibiscus Cottage was a haven in our three-week Kerala adventure with a three year old and a one year old. As soon as we arrived and had Abhi the chef's delicious welcome drink, our shoulders dropped. Olga and Rupert have worked hard to set up this beautiful property and have found a brilliant team to work with them. We arrived to high chairs set up, armbands by the pool, a selection of toys and some books to freshen up our bedtime reading. We quickly fell into a routine of feeding the kids in the evening, putting them down and then having a meal together. It was the first time we have been able to do that on holiday outside of staying at an AirBnB where the cooking, shopping and clearing up falls to you! We did very little during our stay there and days when we didn't leave the property (not even to stagger to the beach) were the kids' favourites. The (chlorinated) pool is beautiful, safe and clean. The garden is enclosed and tidied daily. A few stand out little touches: - Lal, who manages the property, told us about a seven elephant extravaganza at the nearby temple and arranged a rickshaw to take us - an incredible spectacle. - We mentioned we were low on nappies for the baby when we first arrived. A couple of hours later, a package arrived with some from Olga and Rupert's baby. - Boiled, dyed eggs and a painting set to entertain our daughter over the Easter weekend. If you are wavering about whether or not to take young children to Kerala, we'd say go for it - and stay at Hibiscus!
