Perks for the Parents

This 2-bedroom barn conversion on a working farm just a few miles from the New Forest is great for exploring Hampshire, Wiltshire and beyond. It sleeps up to 6 + 1. Families can enjoy the countryside with walks on farm tracks nearby, and forest and moorland routes beside New Forest ponies a short drive away. Introduce the kids to the locals: chickens in the chicken coop, lambs and sheep in the field, and pigs, cattle and ponies nearby. Pretty towns and villages to visit nearby include Winchester, Salisbury and Southampton, with Stonehenge an easy drive away, and National Trust homes including the wonderful Mottisfont in the area.

Why Kids Love it

Children of all ages love the farm: there are plenty of animals to see, farm walks on the footpaths and lovely green fields. Collecting eggs from the chickens is a highlight. A shared large games area under cover in one of the barns give space to play, and there is also a large communal garden with a climbing dome, and a football pitch on one of the fields. There are plenty of children’s books and a large open plan family room to relax in. A high chair, travel crib, and changing mat are provided along with a bamboo toddler mug and plate set for younger guests. The hosts run a wood fired pizza night on Tuesday & Saturday nights; barn guests are welcome to join for £10 per head.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 nights in October, December and at weekends, 4 nights at all other times. There are stair gates for the stairs. Guests must bring their own linen for the travel crib. The backyard is fenced off but young children should be supervised as the farmyard has a tractor and other farm vehicles and there is a side passage that leads to the communal garden in the front. Note that the farm hosts glamping tents a few fields away and so there are some shared areas in and around the property such as the football pitch in the field. For larger groups, this property can be booked with The Hay Barn next door. There’s also an additional event room available to hire if you’re planning a party. Dogs are welcome on request: £30 for the stay which includes dog bowls, treats & waste bags (max 2 dogs per accommodation but they are not allowed upstairs, or to be left alone and must kept on a lead around the farm yard).

About the Location

The residence is 10 minutes outside Romsey in Hampshire, 30 minutes by car from Salisbury, and well located for visiting Stonehenge, Winchester and Southampton. Near to Broadlands Estate, home of Lord Mountbatten, the property is 6 miles from Romsey, which has great independent shops, and restaurants and some excellent pubs (the host can advise). The beautiful New Forest is 20 minutes’ drive away. The nearest train station is 30 minutes by taxi at Winchester from which London is 1 hour away. Southampton is great for a rainy day with the West Quay, Maritime Museum, and a luxury cinema complex to entertain families. The nearest airport is in Southampton, 25 minutes’ drive away, with Heathrow 1 hour 20 minutes’ drive away.

Accommodation Details

This converted barn has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms on 2 floors. On the ground floor, there is a large open plan kitchen / diner / living space with a wood-burning stove, breakfast bar, a dining table seating up to 6 and folding doors to the garden. There is a bedroom on this floor with a super kingsize bed and a shower room next door. (This room could work well for guests with accessibility needs: it has direct access to the living areas and garden with only 1 step at the front/back doors). Upstairs there is a bedroom with 2 twin beds that can be made up as a kingsize bed, plus a single bed with a pull-out bed beneath it. Outside, there are front and rear private gardens complete with BBQ, garden furniture and parking, plus a shared games room and football pitch.

Style Notes

Country classic. This beautifully modernized barn has a fabulous family living area with a kitchen that makes preparing family meals and socialising a breeze. The wooden floors and original ancient beams keep the rustic vibe alive while sleek, white units and modern appliances in the kitchen bring it firmly up to date. We especially like the color pops of the blue velvet curtains in the downstairs bedroom, the ethnic cushions and rug in the neutral living room and the hand-turned wooden dining table and chairs.

We live in the UK on a farm but love exploring cities and Europe for mini breaks from our busy lives.

New Forest, Hampshire

Wild ponies and Peppa Pig

Known for its wild ponies, heathlands and forest trails, the New Forest is a family-friendly area of southern England perfect for a countryside break. Spot old cars and ancient gardens at Beaulieu, explore by horseback or spend sunny days at sandy beaches nearby. Paultons Park, a theme park encompassing Peppa Pig Land, is also just a short drive away.

The accommodation was amazing - spacious, modern, stylish, fully equipped with all the mod cons and home comforts to make our stay as relaxing as possible. The kids loved the play barn, seeing the animals and collecting the eggs from the chickens! The location is amazing, just down the road from Paultons Park which is always a great day out. There's supermarkets nearby although the honesty shop at the farm is great too for any staples you forget or any meat for your BBQ. All in all, would definitely recommend!!

We loved our stay here! We had two kids and their grandparents with us, plenty of room for 6 and the kids loved their split sofa bed. We collected eggs from the chickens, fed scraps to the pigs, explored around the country lanes and visited Marwell Zoo. The kids also loved playing in the huge play barn which has ride ons, basketball hoop, balls and table tennis. Tamara is a lovely host and very helpful too.

The cart shed was a beautiful accommodation and we thoroughly enjoyed our time here. It was so relaxing. Our kids got to experience collecting eggs from the chicken coup each morning and patting the lambs. The accommodation was pristine and very stylish. The accommodation was well set up with crib and high chair and children’s plates and utensils though it didn’t have any toys in the property itself. What was super convenient was the farm “honesty shop” which had meat, kitchen staples like milk and butter and pasta etc and delicious ice creams. We enjoyed visiting nearby Peppa pig world and some beaches. Highly recommend the farm.
