Le Hamel Castel Residence
Perks for the Parents
This 19th century Norman stone house in Northern France boasts heaps of activities for kids and a huge garden, half an hour from the coast. It sleeps 10 (up to 7 adults). The residence is well set-up for 1 or 2 families to share, or those traveling with grandparents or friends. There’s a family-sized dining area in the eat-in kitchen but also a beautiful outside terrace and BBQ, offering a cozy eating atmosphere for family and friends as well as as several outdoor lounge chairs to relax with a drink at the end of the day.
Why Kids Love it
Both the house and the garden cater to kids of all ages. There are so many play opportunities there’s no space for them to be bored. You’ll find a crib and high chairs for little ones, as well as toys (Lego Dublo, Playmobile, Kapla, play kitchen), games and books indoors, plus outdoor amenities like the sandbox, swing, table tennis, badminton, soccer goal and kids tractor. The 100,000sqft park-like garden is surrounded by old trees and hedges, offering space to play and explore nature. Because of its remote position in the countryside, surrounded by meadows and fields, you might spot deer, foxes, pheasants and others animals as well as a fantastic starry sky after dark.
Things to Know
Minimum stay: 2 nights. There is an additional fee of 15 EUR per set per stay for towels and linens supplied. Safety notes: the house is hidden behind old trees and hedges about 150m away from the main road. In spring and fall/ winter, a small ungated pond will contain water: during the summer months, the pond will be dried out and overgrown. The stairs of the main house are equipped with gates. No parties allowed. The residence is located in a rural area so car rental is essential because there’s no public transport available. Outdoor parking is available for 3 cars. It’s around 3.5 hours from Paris.
About the Location
The house is 5 minutes’ drive from Percy en Normandy, where there are supermarkets, shops and restaurants. The region of La Manche offers a multitude of opportunities to explore and experience the beautiful natural surroundings. The World War II landing beaches are located north of the residence, about 45 minutes away. There are a variety of hiking trails, cycle paths, mountain bike trails, crossings of the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel (around 30 minutes away), horse riding or climbing tours (Suisse Normande). There are also short circular walks in the forest of the Abbey of Hambye (onsite 3D tours available) not far from the house, which are also an exciting nature experience for younger children. At the coast, enjoy the special experience of tidal fishing "Pêche à pied" (the national sport of the coastal regions) and the harbor town of Granville and seaside resorts such as Agon-Coutainville - all around 30 minutes away by car. A visit to the private zoo in Champrépus, 20 minutes away, is also worthwhile.
Accommodation Details
The house has 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, set over 3 floors. You’ll find a spacious eat-in-kitchen and a living room with fireplace on the ground floor. The primary bedroom (kingsize) and a second bedroom (queensize) are located up on the first floor. Both bathrooms (with shower) are located on this floor. On the second floor, there’s a twin room and a children’s bedroom for kids ages 5+ with a set of bunk beds. A crib can be placed in the bedrooms as required. A third restroom can be found on the ground floor next to the main entrance. A fifth bedroom with a single bed is located in the annex, ideal for older kids, nanny or au pair.
Style Notes
Contemporary Normandy. The house feels bright and light, mirroring the natural surrounding countryside. Completely renovated in 2020/2021, the hosts paid attention to sustainability and longevity, be it in the selection of regional building materials, the integration of upcycled furniture (a tabletop of wood from Canadian railway wagons, old bench and antique desks), and also in terms of reducing energy and water consumption through modern electrical appliances and high-quality sanitary products. Typical elements of Norman houses have been left exposed, like the big fireplace and the stone door frames. We love the local paintings and photos of Norman artists complementing the decor, the bold reds in the bedrooms and the exposed wooden ceiling beams.
