Perks for the Parents

The manor house on the outskirts of Melgaço, in northern Portugal, includes a large swimming pool and lawn and has plenty to make kids feel at home. The living areas are warm and welcoming and there is a cozy living room for kids with a TV and toys. The spacious kitchen has a dining area and small table for kids for easy family meals. There is an additional single bedroom with a shower for a nanny or au pair. Don’t miss the local award-winning tart wine Alvarinho, with the region’s traditional cuisine (there a lot of restaurants in the city centre and its vicinity), Spanish tapas in Galicia (3km away) and therapeutic treatments at Termas de Melgaço Medical Spa, 3km away.

Why Kids Love it

The house has a living room for kids with plenty of toys plus a TV and DVD player. There is an outside courtyard where they can ride a bicycle, playing football or other games. Although it is a manor house, the surroundings are very cosy and children feel safe. Located in a safe neighborhood with a village and markets walking distance away, the house has plenty of character. The property is fully walled and enclosed. The kitchen has a dining area for children and there is a high chair. Two cribs, a baby bath and a potty can be provided on request. Nearby family attractions include castles in Melgaço and Castro Laboreiro, river rafting in Minho and day trips across to Spain for tapas and more.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 5 nights. Bedrooms are all on the first floor of the manor house; there is a stair gate. The swimming pool is unheated and ungated but is set away from the house; children may need supervision around it. WiFi included. Car parking available; car rental strongly recommended for this area. The estate is protected by dogs; please do not disturb or feed them. They are guard dogs; not allowed in the house.

About the Location

The manor house is on the outskirts of Melgaço, walking distance from the historic center. The local area in the north of Portugal includes Peneda-Gerês National Park, great for hiking or cycling; castles, Roman bridges and Romanesque churches in nearby towns and villages and the famous pilgrimage route of Caminhos de Santiago (St. James's Way). Melgaço has a sports and leisure complex with a health club, tennis court and mini golf, and the Minho river nearby has river rafting, canoeing and canyoning. The closest major airports are Francisco Sá Carneiro (Oporto, 150km) and Vigo (Spain, 58km).

Accommodation Details

This 3-bedroom house includes a large fully-equipped kitchen, a spacious living room, a smaller kids play room/living room, a dining room and veranda. There is a master double bedroom with an ensuite shower, a bedroom with 2 twin beds, a children's bedroom suitable for ages 3 and up with 3 twin beds, and a bathroom. There is also a laundry room. Outside space includes paths, courtyard, vineyards, a swimming-pool and a lawn with stunning views.

Style Notes

Historic Portugal. The house was built in the end of the 17th century by the owners’ ancestors and still respects the local tradition of white painted roofs, to protect it from the frost. It is the place where the family gathers during holidays. The decoration mixed antique and traditional design and includes stone floors, whitewashed walls and polished wood ceilings. There is a mixture of homely and traditional and grand, making it a great place for a large family stay with kids.

Payment policy
When a host accepts your booking, we will automatically charge your card 30% of the total cost of the stay on acceptance if the check in date is more than 6 weeks away. We will send you a balance payment reminder at 6 weeks before check in and you will be required to submit your payment to finalise your reservation. If a host accepts your booking and the check in date is 6 weeks away or less, we will charge your card 100% of the total cost of the stay on acceptance.
Cancellation policy
For All Bookings: If a guest wishes to cancel a booking due to a Government imposed lockdown or border closure on any of the booked dates (both home city/country and/or destination city/country), a full refund of monies paid up to the date of cancellation less a 10% of the total cost of the stay Kid & Coe cancellation fee (which can also be converted to travel credits for use to book any property on the site) For bookings where the check in date is from 1st June - 15th July 2021 and also from 1st September - 31st December 2021: If a guest wishes to cancel a booking up to 1 week before the check in date, a full refund of monies paid up to the date of cancellation less a 15% of the total cost of the stay Kid & Coe cancellation fee (which can also be converted to travel credits for use to book any property on the site) If a guest wishes to cancel a booking 1 week or less before the check in date, a refund of 50% of monies paid up to the date of cancellation will be given. The host would also consider working with the guest to reschedule the stay. For bookings where the check in date is from 15th July - 31st August 2021: For cancellations notified at 6 weeks or more from the check in date, guests can either opt for credit equal to the value of the amount paid, or opt for a monetary refund less a cancellation fee of 15% of the total cost of the booking and a 2.5% processing fee. For cancellations notified at 6 weeks or less from the check in date, no refunds are due unless the host agrees. In these cases, the guest can either opt for a credit equal to the value of the total amount paid, or a monetary refund less a cancellation fee of 15% of the total cost of the booking and a 2.5% processing fee. Some hosts may also consider rescheduling a stay, in which case the guest’s funds will be applied to the new booking and no change fees will apply. We strongly urge guests to consider travel insurance to help in the case of extenuating circumstances. Kid & Coe reserves the right to change these policies. Quinta da Calçada is my family place where I gather my daughters and son, and my grandchildren during holidays. The kids love to play in the swimming pool, to run on the lawn, explore the Quinta limits, to climb its trees, to pick up the fruit, and relish with an ice cream when playing traditional games at the eira (barn floor). I love to travel around the world, to meet people from other countries, and interact with different cultures.

We had a wonderful stay in Melgaco at the Calcada residence. We were a large group of 7, 4 adults and 3 children, and the house accommodated us perfectly. The interior is quite rustic, but the pictures do not do the property justice. It is set on a vineyard, with gorgeous outside areas to relax and eat, with views of the rolling hills of Spain and nearby vineyards. Breathtaking! Ana went above and beyond with providing local knowledge, including superb restaurants and day trips to explore the area. Every recommendation she gave us we thoroughly enjoyed. The kitchen is well equipped. One of the best parts of the house is that, from the back, the house feels very private, yet you walk right out of the front gate into the town of Melgaco, with a grocery store, restaurants and cafes directly across the street.
