Perks for the Parents

This luxury safari camp on Santa Cruz island offers an incomparable safari experience for families on the Galapagos Islands. Stay on a 135-acre farm in either one of 9 safari tents or in a 3-suite apartment in the main safari lodge. Typical stays are 6 days, 5 nights: the tailor-made tours include trips to deserted beaches, flamingo lagoons and the Charles Darwin Research Center. The private, custom family safari is led by a core group of hand-picked naturalist guides, many of whom are parents and understand the need for flexibility and patience. It’s an exceptionally engaging educational experience and a once-in-a-lifetime experience for parents and children alike.

Why Kids Love it

This is a fantastic way to see one of the world’s most outstanding nature reserves as a family, with a child-friendly tour curated just for families. The camp has an infinity pool, play room with games and projector, yoga deck, WiFi and visiting wildlife, such as Galapagos tortoises, egrets and owls for children to spot during their stay. During school holidays, younger children can enjoy the camp’s Kids Club with a series of creative activities at the end of each day. Food is all included and the chef is adept at serving up healthy snacks and kid-friendly meals. The tours are ideally best for children over 6, but babies and younger can be accommodated and the owners have cots and baby kit - a baby bath, bed rails and a high chair are available.

Things to Know

Rates are based on a typical stay of 5 nights, 6 days and start at $6,550 per person. Ask the host for a custom quote which depends on the dates required. All meals and guided activities (which will be confirmed according to the group's interests) are included. Kids under 12 pay a reduced rate in the tented accommodation when sharing with 2 adults. Flights, laundry, insurance, tips and Galapagos National Park entry fee ($100 adults, $50 under 12s) are not included. You’ll want to get out and explore so make sure to bring good walking shoes, sandals, sunhat, sun protection, swimming costumes, insect repellant and a waterproof jacket. Vaccinations are not required for this region.

About the Location

The site is located on Santa Cruz island in the Galapagos, a large dormant volcano island with plenty of wildlife. This land safari includes everything from beaches, spotting giant turtles, exploring underground lava tunnels, sea swimming, surfing and more. It’s much more than a wildlife safari: with excursions to organic coffee plantations, a workshop with a local artist and a day trip with a local fisherman, cultural exchange is part of the program. Tour guides (and site babysitters) are both English and Spanish speaking. Flights to Santa Cruz are available from mainland Ecuador.

Accommodation Details

There’s a choice of accommodation: either in safari tents with double beds and a sofa bed for kids, sleeping 2 adults and 1 child under 12, or in a 3-suite lodge with 2 twin rooms, playroom and double bedroom, sleeping 6. The lodge accommodation is made up of 3 double bedrooms, interconnected but with separate doors, and is suitable for families bringing a nanny with them. Elsewhere on site, there’s a swimming pool, viewpoint for sundowners, yoga area, outdoor dining area, and main lodge with loung area.

Style Notes

African inspiration. This family-owned camp is ideally located, private, quiet, and far from the crowds of Puerto Ayora. The lodge’s position on the rim of an extinct volcanic cone inspired the lodge’s design: an elegant arc that greets the sun in the morning to the east that’s bathed in golden light at the end of the day. It’s surrounded by trees, birds and tumbling hills down to the ocean, all framed into view on the lodge veranda.

Santa Cruz, Galapagos

The land of the giant tortoise

The second largest island of the Galapagos archipelago, Santa Cruz is a large dormant volcano with plenty of wildlife to see. At Tortuga Bay, a short walk from the island's capital Puerto Avora, marine iguana, birds and Galapagos crabs thrive amid the mangroves alongside giant Galapagos tortoise and white tip reef sharks.
