Perks for the Parents

“The Supercool Country House” - The Times. This magnificent, late Victorian manor with a stunning interior is set in its own estate with a walled garden, acres of lawn and a private river beach, offering a real slice of English country life. It comfortably sleeps 16. If more beds are required, please contact the hosts. Somerleaze House is perfect for family gatherings, reunions, milestone events or simply a holiday away from home, offering fun for kids of all ages and relaxation for the grown ups. It comes with an adjacent self-contained cottage (sleeps 2) for guests who crave privacy from the main house or welcome refuge for nannies and grandparents. A stylish and holistic gym makes it easy for you to dabble in some self-care. You can use the host's concierge service, hire chefs, book spa treatments at home, hunker down to a roaring fire, huddle around a ceremonial fire pit or briskly march over fields towards the bustling town of Frome to visit the weekly markets and vibey cobbled streets.

Why Kids Love it

The sprawling grounds are definitely the biggest draw. Children become wildlings and grown-ups can relax on the terrace with panoramic views of the gardens. There is a newly heated pool, trampolines, table tennis, an indoor trapeze, an apple tree swing and woodlands for playing in. The family room is well stocked with analog toys and games to keep kids entertained for hours and there is a massive screen for movie nights, sporting must-sees or lazy day watching. Out and about, kids will enjoy Longleat Safari & Adventure Park (20 mins) set in the grounds of an English stately home, picnics in the ruins of Nunney Castle (15 mins), or exploring Wookey Hole Caves (50 mins) and if energy expenditure is important, the kids will not want to leave the Frome Bouldering Rooms, a minute’s drive from the house. The hosts have an extensive list of activities to keep them busy rain or shine which they can share with you after booking.

Style Notes

Luxurious English country house. Somerleaze House beautifully blends Victorian architecture and a mountain limestone exterior with a modern, vibrant interior designed by Jo Berryman Studios. It features on the cover of Jo’s first authored publication ‘Expressive Interiors’. The house is a cornucopia of design gems from the retro-futuristic leather sofas to the newly refurbished kitchen. The windows have original shutters and serve up panoramic views of the beautiful grounds, while an arched ecclesiastical-style door opens into the coolest state of the art gym with a view. Combining contemporary furniture with antiques and intense focus on comfort, Somerleaze offers a truly unique space to stay. We love the artistic yet homely ambience, the very large and very beautiful house and the wonderful private country setting.

Our stay at Somerleaze was nothing short of phenomenal! The home is gorgeous and designed so thoughtfully such that it's an amazing home away from home for both kids and adults. Jo and Philip have truly thought of everything! The few things they didn't have that we asked about (high chair, baby gate, converters) they purchased and installed immediately — completely outdoing our expectations. Every one of their recommendations was incredible. We used their recommended chef for a few dinners, sitter to watch the kids a couple of nights, and aid to stock the fridge before we arrived. Everything was flawless! The home itself is so inspiring, we all left wanting to bring Jo home with us for redesigns. The kids were thrilled to find the trampoline, pool, and soccer pitch. Don't hesitate, book immediately!

We had the weekend of a lifetime in the stunning home of Jo & Philip. I was celebrating a milestone birthday with wonderful friends and family and Somerleaze was everything I dreamed of from start to finish. Communication with Philip was easy breezy and consistent. It was a financial stretch for us to make this happen and it truly was worth every single penny! The pool, the glorious garden, cooking in the fabulous golden kitchen, this place has everything you could ever conjure up in your imagination. We had a big dinner out on the massive lawn one summer evening, with candles in hurricane vases, while the peonies swayed in the breeze along the path down to the riverside beach. One of our friends who stayed with us commented how, so often in rental places, there is some long manual with rule after rule on to treat the place you are staying - and having rented our own home out in the past, I know the temptation to do so - however, you will find no such manual at Somerleaze. Instead you get a beautifully written booklet telling you all about how to get the most out of your stay there: all that is available to you, how things work, where to go for walks, great local pubs and markets and what you won't want to miss out on. It gave us and the whole feel of our stay, a real sense of abundance and generosity. We felt privileged to be entrusted with such a beautiful and fantastically- designed home, and we certainly tried to treat it as such. There were several interior designers in our group, and while we were all wowed by Jo Berryman's beautiful design work on the house, the professional designers amongst us were particularly taken with it all (and were often to be found, -throughout the long weekend- walking from room to room gazing at all the excellent details of every corner of the property. Thanks again Philip & Jo, and we hope to stay again in the not-too-distant future!

We had an amazing time staying at Somerleaze House! The place is absolutely beautiful, with plenty of space for the whole family to spread out and relax. The house has a really welcoming and cozy vibe, and the outdoor area is perfect for enjoying some peaceful time in nature, we had a lovely evening by the fire pit. It’s super family-friendly too (kids toys and a trampoline in the garden), with everything you could need for a comfortable stay. The host was incredible— friendly and always quick to help with anything we needed. They gave us some fantastic local recommendations that made our stay even more special. Whether it was the easy check-in, little thoughtful touches around the house, or the overall warm hospitality, we really felt right at home. I’d highly recommend this house to anyone looking for a relaxing group family getaway. We honestly didn’t want to leave and can’t wait to come back!
