Perks for the Parents

This renovated farmhouse 15 minutes north of Todi in ravishing Umbria is set in a 70-acre nature preserve and has a pool, 4 romantic bedrooms and Tiber River Valley views. With a large gourmet kitchen, dining room for 10, outdoor grill and seating for 10, cooking and eating are a pleasure. Private chefs and grocery shopping can be arranged. The master bedroom has a free-standing outdoor tub on its private terrace. The farmhouse has a vegetable garden with fresh herbs, tomatoes, eggplant and wild strawberries. Two hours from Rome or Florence, it is set among vineyards and olive groves where the owners produce organic red wines and olive oil. Guests are welcomed with eggs from the free range chickens, plus extra virgin olive oil and organic wine from the estate.

Why Kids Love it

The residence works well for all ages. High chairs, cribs, games, puzzles and toys are provided. The pool is a great draw and has a shallow end for younger kids; there is plenty of space to play in the garden also. There are hiking trails on the property. Babysitting available. Bedroom configurations allow for a toddler bed, cribs and a bedroom set up with 2 twin beds, as required. Nearby towns and villages sell child-friendly food (pizza, pasta, gelato) along with pretty streets and squares. The town soccer fields near the pizzeria are great for a family immersion in local culture - this is where the locals gather in the evening for soccer, tennis, ping pong or to just buy a popsicle and let the kids run around.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 7 days. Rental is from Saturday to Saturday. The property is on 1 floor so no stairs for children. The pool is unfenced but set away from the house about 40 steps below the farmhouse; the maximum depth of the pool is 1.5 meters - no diving please. The property includes outside cats and a sheepdog - they are docile and children generally enjoy playing with them. They are kept outside. All rooms have air conditioning (which is included in the price) and retractable mosquito screens. There is WiFi throughout plus a Bose docking station.

About the Location

The residence is in Collazzone, about 30 minutes south of Perugia and 15 minutes north of Todi. It is about 10 minutes from the village, which has a delicious trattoria/pizzeria, cafe, butchers and small grocery store. A larger grocery store is 15 minutes away. Plenty of day trips are possible, including to Montefalco, Orvieto, Civita di Bagnoregio, Assisi and Spello, Bevagna, and more. The property is 2 hours from Rome or Florence. The closest airport is S. Francesco Airport in Perugia (with direct flights from London and Munich), 30 minutes away. Access to the property is via a dirt road of approximately 1.5 km - please be aware if hiring a rental car. A car is essential in this area.

Accommodation Details

The property is set on a 70-acre nature preserve in the heart of Umbria. It includes 4 bedrooms – 3 with a queen-plus bed and 1 with a king bed (or 2 wide single beds). All bedrooms are of a similar size and all have spacious ensuite bathrooms and private terraces. There is a spacious eat-in kitchen, a TV room with pull out couch and a dining room seating up to 10, plus a welcome area with an additional coffee machine and water. There is a large living room with fireplace and a large hall/room. The property is surrounded by mature gardens of lavender, sage, white roses and rosemary, a fire pit and a large private pool.

Style Notes

Modern classic. This reinvented historic farmhouse on a beautiful estate is a sophisticated mix of modern and traditional with every conceivable convenience included. The farmhouse is a mix of old and new: terracotta ceilings and walnut beams with cement floors and resin counters, with earth tones throughout. Most furniture was made by local woodworkers and artisans. It has a clean, modern aesthetic but is not cold. Nothing better than watching the sunset over the Tiber River Valley from the wisteria terrace.

We are an American/Italian family in Boston, MA. Our organic farm in Umbria produces organic wine and olive oil. We and are proud to welcome visitors to the small village and the spectacular countryside around us.

Todi, Umbria

Italy's most liveable city

This medieval hill town south of Perugia is a photogenic place of movie-set piazzas, crenellated buildings and views. Eat gelato and wander the cobbled alleys, visit vineyards and bribe the kids with Perugia’s Baci chocolates.

We didn't want to leave! The Mandola Residence was a gorgeous tranquil spot for our family of four, plus grandparents, to call home while we explored Umbria. Since the house has two wings, our young kids could go to bed early and wake up early while parents and grandparents finished dinner and/or slept in. We ate meals on the terrace and spent every afternoon in the beautifully designed pool, snacking on cherries from one of the nearby trees! Eileen was the most professional host, responding to emails right away and making sure we had everything we needed while also giving us plenty of privacy while we were on the property.
