The Mediterranean has long been a favorite for summer vacations thanks to its reliably sunny weather, warm waters and relaxed lifestyle that’s perfect for those looking to rest and recharge those batteries.
Spanning different countries and islands, each with their own identity, cuisine and culture, you’ll find plenty of different Mediterranean destinations for families to choose from. We asked our Kid & Coe hosts in different parts of The Med to tell us more about their destination, to help you find the perfect place for your next family vacation.
1. Crete, Greece
Marina, host at The Elounda Villa 1 & 2
“Crete is one of the most unique islands of the Mediterranean..! Crete is ideal for family vacations because of its crystal clear waters, the very long season with ideal mild weather, the Cretan diet which is one of the healthiest diets in the world and these are just a few tips of a long list.”
Best For: archeological sites and museums along with a rich selection of water-sports, amazing beaches and stunning landscapes. Read our guide on where to stay in the Greek Islands with kids.
Where to Stay: The Elounda Villa 1
2. Mallorca, Spain
Wieteke, host at The Can Matas Residence:
“Selva is a picturesque and (still) authentic little village in Mallorcas Tramuntana mountain range – a wonderful starting point for hiking and cycling. There are some outstanding restaurants in the village, within walking distance (even visited by the Obamas!).
Village life here is great for families: in the morning get your fresh croissants and ‘ensaimadas’ from the bakery, and before returning home have a morning coffee on the square with the locals while children play for hours on the main square and make international friends.”
Best For: Beautiful sandy beaches and traditional historic villages, all within half an hour of eachother.

3. Campania, Italy
Marzio, host at The Contrada Carbone Residence:
“Cilento National Park, the southernmost area of Campania, has been included by UNESCO in the World Heritage List. In almost one hundred kilometers of coast there are cliffs overlooking the sea, golden beaches, wild and unspoilt landscapes, and large bays with fully equipped beach clubs.
In recent years, scientists from all over the world – you may have heard about the American biologist and nutritionist Ancel Keys – have been drawn to Cilento to try to understand the secret of healthy aging, which means the area is on its way to qualifying as a scientifically confirmed blue zone, alongside the Japanese island of Okinawa, the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica, Ogliastra in eastern Sardinia and the Greek island of Ikaria. As in the other blue zones, there is hardly just one reason why so many people are over 100 years old. For a long life a combination of healthy food, physical activity, stable social networks and a sense of meaning in life are all needed.
Inspired by the nutritional values and cuisine of countries around the Mediterranean Sea, the “Mediterranean Diet”, recently named as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, was born in Cilento.
Long sandy beaches, colourful seafront fringed with palms and eucalyptus trees, small restaurants, cosy venues and cottages make Cilento National Park the perfect seaside resort for families from all over the world in search of friendly and charming spots off the beaten track.”
Best For: Breathtaking views from the hills covered with centuries-old cork oaks, trekking the mountains and cruising along the coast, mouth-watering regional cuisine and the special friendliness of the locals.

4. Ibiza, Spain
Zoie, host at The Santa G Residence:
“Ibiza is such a special island for families and kids of all ages. There are always more secrets and corners to explore. Dressed up nights out or hiking and kayaking, world class restaurants or jamón serrano bocadillos wrapped in foil on the beach; it has something for everyone and for every mood.”
Best For: Hippy natural northern beaches and pebbly private coves, or fancy white sand beach clubs where you can order wine to your loungers. Read our guide to Ibiza with Kids for local insider knowledge and suggestions.

5. Mykonos, Greece
Panos, host at The Agrari Beach Residence:
“Mykonos is a great family destination as it combines a choice of over dozen pristine sandy beaches of the highest calibre, sightseeing/excursions and sporting activities, a vibrant food scene, high quality of services, all in a compact island that is very easy to navigate and to reach via direct international flights, without the hassle of ferry travel.
Agrari is the most family-friendly area in Mykonos island, as it offers a large sandy beach, partly shaded by trees, watersports, two local tavernas and a relaxed cocktail bar, while being a very quiet area at night, yet a stone’s throw from the island’s cosmopolitan beach clubs and Mykonos Town. A dozen sandy beaches and numerous quality restaurants are within a 20-minute drive radius and the Ano Mera village with all its amenities is around a 10-minute drive away (equidistant to the international airport).”
Best For: sandy beaches, a vibrant food scene, and international-level services.

6. Puglia, Italy
Alan, host at The Contrada Lamatrocolla Residence
“We fell in love with the Itria Valley because of its natural beauty, relaxing atmosphere, and stunning red southern sunsets. Because of its picturesque borghi, such as Locorotondo, Cisternino and Ostuni. And because of its location on the murgia hills, providing a pleasant, cool breeze while being just a 15-minute drive from the seaside.
The Itria Valley is ideal for family vacations due to its wide range of experiences and activities. Families can explore the beautiful borghi, enjoy biking, spend time at the seaside, and try out the amazing Apulian typical cuisine, ensuring that there is something for everyone.
What sets the Itria Valley apart from other holiday destinations is its distinctive Apulian vibe. It offers stunning seaside locations without being / feeling isolated. Unlike Tuscany (where I live most of my time), where borghi are often small with limited populations (1 to 5 thousand people), the Itria Valley’s borghi are small towns with vibrant cultural attractions, including events and concerts, especially in the summer.”
Best For: The option of both a countryside and a seaside holiday. Additionally, the Trulli are unique structures found only in Puglia, nowhere else in the world.
Where to Stay: The Contrada Lamatrocolla Residence
