Discover the best places to go and things to do in Melides, Portugal from journalist and family-friendly travel expert Amanda Blakley.
Where to Eat
O Melidense
A Restaurant in the middle of town serving up traditional portugese fare. Their grilled sardines and mackerel are divine, served alongside a fresh salad, arroz and batatas fritas. We also enjoyed the Restaurant at Vermehlo, Blue Melides, O Fadista, and Tosca Melides.
What to Do
Praia de Melides
Our days were filled with complete and utter relaxation. We migrated from the pool to the sun-dappled verandas and then to the beach. The beaches are wild and wonderful with golden sand and turquoise waters as far as the eye can see. You can rent chairs and an umbrella for a full or half day. Visit Praia de Melides and Praia de Galé.
What to See
Comporta
Be sure to pop into Comporta for a meal or a beach club lunch (we love Sublime Comporta Beach Club and Restaurante Sal). Walk around the cute little town, pop into the shops and people watch from a shady seat under a cafe umbrella.
Where to Stay
We fell in love with Vale Figueira Residence and can vouch for its ideal location (15 minute stroll into town through a cork forest and down a country lane). With a meandering garden for quiet moments, our family enjoyed the expansive saltwater pool and all the space for the children to be wild & free.
Insider Tip for Parents:
Our best advice for traveling overseas with littles is to stay somewhat on Eastern Standard time (with daily siestas). It allows for later dinners and a more forgiving schedule in general. Going to bed late and rising later.
